<image:title>Racial Justice - K College established an Intercultural Center in 2016 after two years of bitter struggle by students.</image:title>
<image:caption>The ACSJL supported this student movement by providing a safe space for students to meet and test out organizing strategies. Academic Director Dr. Lisa Brock played a pivotal role as a faculty member encouraging faculty to support this effort and ultimately convincing the President to step in more forcefully. This also coincided with a serious racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic cyber attack on the student government.</image:caption>

<image:title>Racial Justice - ACSJL staff fellow Anne Dueweke used her fellowship to research and write a 160-page manuscript.</image:title>
<image:caption>The book, An American College: A Racial and Colonial History is due to publish in 2021. ACSJL staff fellow Anne Dueweke used her ACSJL staff fellowship to research the history of K College, deploying a racial and anticolonial lens. “The fellowship has been absolutely critical to my project of researching and writing a racial and colonial history of Kalamazoo College. The financial support allowed me to hire research assistants, purchase books, travel to interview alumni of color and visit archives and transcribe oral history interviews. Even more important was the support and guidance I received from Mia Henry and Lisa Brock. They encouraged me, guided me toward resources, gave me feedback on my work, and provided a platform to share what I was learning with the community. The fellowship also lent me credibility, which was especially important when approaching alumni of color for interviews. Being able to say that Arcus was supporting the project I believe helped me to establish trust.” — Anne Dueweke</image:caption>

They noted the most helpful topic was Compassionate Accountability (and the breakout rooms to talk about it) because it detailed tangible skills to achieve it. In my staff meetings, we tied it back to cancel culture and the importance of asking ‘why’ instead. “ — Erika Perry, M.ED, Area Coordinator, Student Development at Kalamazoo College</image:caption>

<image:title>Racial Justice - Two regional fellows, Linda Cyperty-Kilborn and Julie Dye host the film More Than a Word, which details the degrading impact of racist language used by sports teams in the US.</image:title>
<image:caption>“I was already pretty aware of these issues AND I found the program (film, etc) very informative. The movie was excellent as well as the speakers after the movie. Racism is so pervasive and people can be so cruel and insensitive to others...Good Event and FOOD. Great panel! Very good. As someone not focused on sports, I had no idea how the Washington fans used the team's mascot's name. I was shocked. The documentary was very well done and the speakers were knowledgeable and passionate. I like how the film covered both the football fans' perspective and the people who are opposing the R word for sports teams. Great video. I remember the disagreements when I was a teenager (26 now) about the Illini Chiefs but now I understand the importance of the change.” “Thank you for the flyer on Bill 487. Appreciated the info on the bill being considered in the Senate committee. Very informative and effective. I think I understand better the strong degree to which the sports mascot/naming creates a false, damaging stereotype. The historical background and opinions combined made a very convincing argument. The information I was given is easily reproduced and can be distributed to people in my area. Good to reconnect with community activists.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Immigration - The Kalamazoo County ID was established in 2018 and was the direct result of a study conducted by K College’s Professor of Anthropology, Dr. Francisco Villegas, and his student research group, along with the collaboration of ACSJL regional fellow, Nelly Fuentes.</image:title>
<image:caption>This work was funded by the ACSJL and K's Center for Civic Engagement. The report “The Kalamazoo County ID: Needs, Barriers, and Possibilities“ addressed the impact of the lack of identification for undocumented members of the community. They also performed an evaluation of the program “1,500 and Counting: The Kalamazoo County ID Implementation, Access, and Evaluation Report”. Here, ACSJL staff gets the ID. The IDs are open to all residents and in solidarity, it’s important that as many people get them as possible.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Coming to the With/out ¿Borders conference in 2014, as an African immigrant living in Detroit, reaffirmed in me that there was room to create a society where passports and visas were obsolete. I was moved and inspired and encouraged to continue building and working for my fellow black immigrants. This conference cemented in me the need to pursue social justice, and it is part of why I applied to the Master of Social Justice program from Marygrove College. I graduated in May 2016 and have remained engaged and active in the trenches; tirelessly centering the narratives of black immigrants and highlighting our plight at the intersections of discrimination, xenophobia, race, religion, culture, and class“ —Seydi Sarr ABISA - Founder</image:caption>

<image:title>Policing and Mass Incarceration - Darrell Cannon, formerly and falsely incarcerated, visits the ACSJL.</image:title>
<image:caption>Chicagoan, Darrell Cannon, is one of over 100 Black men picked up on the southside of Chicago by a notorious unit of the Chicago Police Department led by Detective Jon Burge and forced through torture into false confessions. These cases led the former governor of Illinois George Ryan to institute a moratorium on the death penalty in the state in 2000. However, many of the victims remained behind bars. After nearly three decades of social justice struggle, and a review of their cases, most of the men have now been released. This Burge torture survivor, who was wrongly imprisoned for 24 years, spoke to community members at ACSJL.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“There is no exaggeration when I say that the ACSJL has transformed my conception of social justice. I had always had such intuitions and interests, but the programming, community, and funding provided through Arcus refined my theoretical understanding and expanded my social justice lens. I was able to hear from international leaders, attend events like the Digital Pedagogy Lab to enrich my teaching and make connections with my SW Michigan ‘neighbors’ of similar values through extensive programming. I also know that this volume of impact has occurred for countless others, especially students at Kalamazoo College.” — Josh Moon, Ph.D. Educational Technology Specialist Kalamazoo College</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art and Justice - Stranger Land, 2014</image:title>
<image:caption>“The opportunity to work on Stranger Land through a Visiting Fellowship at the ACSJL in 2014 was a unique and meaningful experience for me. I got a chance to collaborate with a group of students from Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University in collecting local stories through interviews, casual conversations, overheard dialogues, shared writings, and oral history archives, among others. I also got to work with other members of the community, including researchers at KVCC’s Kalamazoo Valley Museum. Stranger Land ultimately functioned as a textual landscape of voices from the many Kalamazoo communities. It served as a mapping of sorts, a place where painful stories coexist with stories of love, activism, poetry, and the imaginary, and that is precisely what the ACSJL is to me. “ — Nayda Collazo-Llorens</image:caption>

The program, now in its eleventh year, has continued to grow. It yielded approximately $95,000 in external grants that provided a salary for the Post Baccalaureate Fellow and studio rent. Space itself has been used to host exhibitions and events for numerous civic-engagement classes (from the English Department, Spanish Department, Public Health Concentration, and other areas), community partner activities, and art students of all levels.</image:caption>

She worked with local cancer survivors of color to co-produce and participate in this exhibition. “I was honored to be a Visiting Fellow during Spring 2013. This was an amazing opportunity for me to be part of an academic environment in which I was able to conduct research as well as interact with students, faculty, and the community. I was provided a studio, access to the library, to books. Because of this, I created 20 small format installations, 10 drawings, and wrote a poem; all were connected to my experience with breast cancer. I also worked with and connected with BIPOC women in the area who also had breast cancer. We had an exhibition at K’s downtown studio which was very well attended.” — Sonia Baez-Hernandez, Artist, Educator, Cancer Survivor</image:caption>

<image:title>Art and Justice - Reclaiming Black Male Identity Through the Art of Tattooing</image:title>
<image:caption>An exhibition by Nicole Harrison. She interviewed and photographed men from her own West Side, Chicago community, where Black men use their tattoos to tell the stories of their lives. “The 2012 invitation to the ACSJL provided me a platform to further discuss my MA thesis with others. It also put a spotlight on topics of black masculinity, agency, and body politics in a way that is uplifting and empowering. As such, this opportunity helped to expand my collegiate work as a scholar-activist committed to discussing aspects of urban and youth culture that are often demonized and/or overlooked. The reception I received from both ACSJL, the college, and the city of Kalamazoo, encouraged me to continue this work. “ — Nicole Harrison, Photographer, and Educator</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. Brock, ACSJL Academic Director, interviews Dr. Reid Gómez who was hired to develop the Critical Ethnic Studies program. She is interviewed here in what the ACSJL called Leadership Dinners. These dinners were often held for visitors or newcomers to the College as a way for members of the College to get to know them. They were often asked about their journey so that students might see models of varied social justice leadership pathways.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As junior chair, Dr. Garriga-López received professional development and participated on the Faculty Advisory Board. She is now an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Sociology. “The ACSJL supported my research in Puerto Rico through a Faculty Research Grant…It allowed me to travel to the archipelago in December of 2017, only three months after Hurricane Maria devastated the islands. This support was fundamental to set me on a new research path focused on the relationship between decolonization and disaster response and recovery, especially among small farmers working within the Latin American tradition of agroecology. “ —Adriana Garriga-Lopez, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Sociology, Kalamazoo College</image:caption>

<image:title>Educational Equity and Justice - Ryan Fong, faculty fellow, 2019–2021</image:title>
<image:caption>“I have continued to expand and improve the section of my Victorian literature survey on Poverty, Race, and Urban Crime based on the projects that have been funded by Arcus, including the trip to Mississippi. We also include a prison and abolition set of lessons in our WGS 101 courses, which has been enhanced by that as well. I will be teaching the WGS senior seminar next winter, and it will be on Abolition Feminisms. All of this is setting the foundation for my next book project that will look at prisons and incarceration in the nineteenth-century British imperial context and will use critical abolitionist frameworks.“ — Ryan Fong, Associate Professor of English, Kalamazoo College</image:caption>

<image:title>Educational Equity and Justice - Dr. Bruce Mills is one of two long-term members of the ACSJL Faculty Advisory Board (FAB).</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the board that advised the Academic Director, Dr. Lisa Brock. As FAB members, they assisted in the choice of faculty fellows, invitees for global events, and many other programs. “In addition to working as a Faculty Advisory Board member and gaining a deep sense of how to support inclusion and equity on campus, this work also enriched my study and teaching of American Literature and African American Literature. For instance, it provided the motivation for my collaboration with Kalamazoo community partners to create the Engaging the Wisdom Oral History Project, i.e., the recording and online access to stories of those involved with or influenced by the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s.” — Bruce Mills, Professor of English, Kalamazoo College</image:caption>

<image:title>Educational Equity and Justice - The ACSJL supported various academic programs by mentoring and integrating visiting faculty members whose work included a social justice analytic.</image:title>
<image:caption>“Serving as a Mellon Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership from 2015—16 played an integral role in my early academic career. This position allowed me the opportunity to create and teach two new classes on race, gender, and sexuality; present my research to the campus community, and write several articles for the Praxis Center. I was able to secure a tenure-track teaching position during this postdoctoral fellowship and have also since secured a book contract for my manuscript, The Famous Lady Lovers: African American Women and Same-Sex Desire before Stonewall (UNC Press). The Arcus Center has played an important role in my career and I am appreciative of the support and mentorship of Dr. Lisa Brock.” — Dr. Cookie Woolner, Assistant Professor of History, University of Memphis</image:caption>

<image:title>Educational Equity and Justice - ACSJL Faculty Staff Study Trip to South Africa, December 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>Ten Kalamazoo faculty and staff spent two weeks visiting museums, archives, theaters, foundations, and meeting with artists, professors, poets, archivists, former political prisons, and student activists, We also had deep conversations with legendary leaders such as Superior Court founding justice, Albie Sachs and internationally renown actor/director John Kani. Dr. Lisa Brock, Academic Director and former anti-apartheid leader, developed and led this trip. The goal: to study memory of the anti-apartheid struggle of South Africa as a way to re-imagine social justice pedagogy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“During its tenure, Praxis Center offered weekly insights into the current political moment. As the brainchild of Dr. Lisa Brock, the blog embodied a commitment to rigorously engage with social, political and cultural issues. But Praxis Center was more than a blog; it was a continuously growing and evolving community of thinkers and doers that offered a sense of belonging and hope for making a more just and humane world. “ — Alice Kim, former Praxis Content Editor, Director of Human Rights Practice, University of Chicago, Pozen Center Human Rights Lab</image:caption>

Working at the Arcus Center allowed me to connect with so many impactful people all over the world. The experience deepened my politics and my resolve to continue the struggle to build justice in this world. A community and educational space, intergenerational and decolonial to its core, focused on developing a new generation of freedom fighters while strengthening those of us on the frontlines—the Arcus Center was a one-of-a-kind gem." — Sandy Hudson, Former Praxis Editor in Residence, Co-Founder Black Lives Matter Canada</image:caption>

      <image:title>Science and Social Justice - “I am a chemist and an activist – a chemactivist…</image:title>
<image:caption>and 10-years ago I would not have described myself as such. My understanding of what it means to teach science in a socially just way was formed by my work with the ACSJL starting in 2010. With the Science and Social Justice project I learned to trust my instincts and to question every aspect of what I do and teach in my science classrooms.” — Regina Stevens-Truss, Professor of Chemistry, Kalamazoo College</image:caption>

<image:title>Science and Social Justice - Dr. Binney Girdler created a new Biology course, Science and Social Justice, during her Faculty Fellowship.</image:title>
<image:caption>“When ACSJL was just getting started, I didn't know how much it would impact my teaching and my scholarship. As a scientist I didn't quite see where it fit in, it was just a strange building on the hill. My engagement started with attending events, like the Science and Social Justice conference and the first With/Out - ¿Borders? conference. I began to notice my students' engagement with the Center and that drew me in even more. The space itself became a welcoming refuge on our campus, a place to test my social justice proto-feathers. I got more involved with the second With/Out - ¿Borders? conference and after that, I realized how much social justice work and leadership work wove their way throughout every aspect of my growth as a teacher, a scholar, and a member of our community. Although I can say I am just barely fledged, my Arcus Faculty Fellowship gave me the freedom and courage and the push to really examine my pedagogy and my position within my classroom, the College, and our community. “</image:caption>

DPSF Sponsor and Activist/Scholar Dr. Barbara Ransby, Professor of African American Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, and History at the University of Illinois at Chicago joined us by video to discuss her work and answer grantee questions about racial capitalism, prison abolition and this movement moment.” —Carol Kraemer, Executive Director, Davis Putter Scholarship Fund. “The gathering provided an opportunity for connecting with people that can help with ideas/strategies for my activism. Expanding of network, understanding of DPSF legacy, specific ideas for activism and solidarity work." “This convening came at a crucial time for me. I was beginning to feel defeated in my work. Speaking with other student organizers has been rejuvenating and has given me clear next steps in my campaigns.” “Feeling connected to a community” “We all felt loved, fed, and restored.</image:caption>

<image:title>Global Impacts - The ACSJL hosted Guillermo Gómez-Peña twice. On both occasions, the Center collaborated with the Theater Arts Department and Adriana Garriga-López of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology. In 2012, his mentorship of Latinx students of Mexican heritage was transformative for them, and his performance at the 2014 With/Out ¿Borders? Conference was spectacular.</image:title>

<image:caption>”US-Africa Solidarity in the 21st Century: A Strategic Discussion was hosted by the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership, in collaboration with Western Michigan University from June 2–24, 2013. (It was funded by the MacArthur Foundation.) This meeting led to new relationships with active programs on climate justice, leading to an African climate justice tour, a conference at Howard University, and work with African Organizations on illicit financial flows. “ — William (Bill) Minter, African Solidarity Activist, Africa Focus, No Easy Victories</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainability Justice: Food, Water, and Land - Food Justice Salons</image:title>
<image:caption>The ACSJL provided key leadership to the food justice movement on campus in 2012—13 which led to massive changes on campus. In collaboration with the Center for Civic Engagement, Farms to K, and Migrant Workers Rights and Action (MIRA) a series of Food Justice Salons were held that built on a campus-wide conversation on just, local and sustainable food. National leaders such as Winona La Duke and Dara Cooper shared knowledge to provide context. As a result: the K College dining services contract went out for bid for the first time in 40 years. The selection process was transparent and more open to campus-wide involvement. A just food assessment criteria was developed which led to a new service provider. The first change in 40 years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership had a significant impact on me while a student at Kalamazoo College, and the Center’s philosophy and teachings still influence the way I approach my life and work now. As a recipient of the Social Justice Leadership Award, ACSJL helped me afford tuition at Kalamazoo College. While at K College, I attended numerous trainings and events sponsored by ACSJL. Additionally, with support from the Social Justice Leadership Fund and the SIP Research Stipend, I was fortunate to learn from Grace Lee Boggs in Detroit and explore how US study abroad programs impact host communities through my SIP research in Oaxaca, Mexico. After graduation, ACSJL invested in my professional development by welcoming me as an Arcus Center Advisory Board member. Without the ACSJL, I would be a different person. ACSJL showed me that social justice is more than a moment, but rather a commitment to living life infused with a vision of a more just world. ACSJL demonstrated how to translate values into action by fostering social justice opportunities in systemic and structural ways. These are lessons that I try to incorporate in my work, and values I seek to model. For me and many others, ACSJL has provided space, resources, and relationships to develop ourselves as people, to make mistakes, ask questions, and build our social justice leadership skills. I am incredibly grateful to ACSJL for their continued dedication to making our world a better place.” — Mariah Hennen, K’15</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slow Farming: Resilient, Just, and Joyful Agriculture “I LOVE meeting in Arcus because the space itself unsettles classroom norms and helps students more easily move out of their conditioned ‘student’ roles to become co-creators of the class. And this isn't just because of the physical building but also how the Arcus staff has created a welcoming space that students feel comfortable in and feel ownership over. Being able to meet in a space where students feel ‘in charge’ and at home immediately shifts the class dynamics. In this class, I ask students to plan and facilitate class sessions. During the years that I have taught the class in Arcus, I have observed how the space has inspired students to be more creative in planning these class sessions. I think my class has used every area of the building except for the office space as students have chosen different parts of the space to best suit the activities they wanted to do with the class. And having the kitchen available so that we can cook for each other throughout the class has been such a gift—a gift that has allowed us to give each other the gift of sharing food.” — Amy Newday, Kalamazoo College Faculty, Farmer</image:caption>
